Oval box, the cover, side and base panels engine-turned with horizontal wavy reeding creating a moiré aspect, the side walls divided by four tapering stylised Doric columns hung with laurel wreathes, the frosted gold borders applied with bands of stylised acanthus, the rims on the cover bright-cut

Lot Essay

A. von Solodkoff (Orfèvrerie russe, Fribourg, 1981, p. 209) mentions that Bouddé's boxes are executed in the French style. He illustrates two boxes by him, one of 1773 in the Musée Cognacq-Jay, Paris (p. 141, no. 180) and another depicting Catherine the Great's monument (p. 142, no. 192). The marks on those boxes are identical with the mark on the present box.
