FRENCH, PROBABLY BY EUGENE FONTENAY, CIRCA 1880

Comprising a necklace set with a series of graduated oval plaques of apple green tone, joined by ruby and diamond-set link spacers; a ring and a pair of ear-pendants en suite, mounted in 18K gold, necklace 47.5 cm., with French assay marks

Lot Essay

Although unsigned this style of mounting with rows of rose-cut diamonds surrounding rubies is consistent with the style of Fontenay. Additionally, Fontenay was known for his use of pale apple green jadeite as he became fascinated with this material after it became available in quantity in the West following the sack of the Summer Palace in 1860.
