A 120-PLATE SUJI KABUTO [HELMET WITH STANDING FLANGES] AND A MENPO
Edo Period (18th Century)
A fine russet-iron bowl of shinomi-nari [high conical] form, the 120 plates well forged with seven rows of rivets invisible from the outside, the upper two rows staggered because of the narrowing of the plates, mounted with a six-tier gilt- copper and shakudo [copper-gold alloy] tehen-kanamono [finial], the five-tier Hineno-jikoro [close-fitting neck-guard] of black-lacquered kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae] with dark blue kebiki-odoshi [close lacing], the small leaf-shaped fukigaeshi [turnbacks to the neck-guard] leather covered with a shakudo [gold-copper alloy] fukurin [edging], the mabisashi [peak] similarly leather covered edged with a gilt-copper fukurin. Together with a russet-iron menpo [mask] well forged in ressei style with bold wrinkles to the cheeks and well made otayori-no-kugi [pegs beneath the chin], and remnants of hair moustache, the yodarekake [throat defence] missing (2)
