AN EBOSHI-NARI KABUTO [HELMET IN THE FORM OF A COURT CAP] AND A MENPO
Edo Period (18th Century)
The tall russet-iron bowl constructed in two pieces with a deep brow plate embossed with eyebrows to the front, an applied dragon and clouds in iron covering the crest of the helmet from front to rear, the lower edge of the bowl with a simple pierced border with traces of silver nunome [overlay], the shakudo [copper-gold alloy] kuwagatadai [mount for the horns] with gilded kuwagata [horns] attached to the mabisashi [peak], the gold-lacquered ichimanju jikoro [small rounded neck-guard] of iron kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae] with pale green kebiki-odoshi [close lacing], the leather-covered fukigaeshi [turnbacks to the neck-guard] with a gilt mon [crest]. Together with a matching russet-lacquered Nara-style mask with hair moustache and chin tuft and copper teeth, the four-lame yodarekake [throat defence] of kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae] gold-lacquered and laced in green (2)
