Lot Essay

The 32-gun frigate H.M.S. Ambuscade was built at Deptford in 1773. Captured in a two-ship duel by the French 28-gun frigate Bayonnaise off the mouth of the Gironde on 14th December 1798, she was absorbed into the French Navy under her own name and fought under the tricolour for five years. On 28th May 1803, H.M.S. Victory sighted and recaptured her off Cape Ortegal as the flagship was making her way to the Mediterranean to join the fleet off Toulon.
