JOSLIN'S Six Inch Terrestrial Globe Containing the latest Discoveries. BOSTON. Gilman Joslin. 1870 Drawn and Engraved by W.B. Annin.
A fine 6-inch (15.2cm.) diameter terrestrial globe made up of twelve finely engraved hand-coloured gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees, hours and minutes, the Meridian of Greenwich ungraduated, the anti-meridian graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the oceans with an analemma and lines for the Northern Limit of Wood, Northern Limit of Grain, Northern Limit of the Vine, Northern Limit of Bananas, Southern Limit of Bananas, Southern Limit of the Vine, Southern Limit of Grain and Southern Limit of Wood, the continents outlined in green and with nation states delicately shaded in yellow, blue, green and pink and showing rivers, mountains, deserts, towns, cities and the Greta Wall of China, Greenland with no northern coastline, Canada with various native territories shown including those of of the Blackfeet and Copper Indians and the Chipewyans, central Africa south of the Mountains of the Moon with little detail and labelled UNEXPLORED, South Africa labelled Hottentots, western Australia labelled NEW HOLLAND, eastern Australia labelled NEW SOUTH WALES, Tasmania labelled VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, the islands of New Zealand labelled in Maori Eahei Nomauwe and Tavai Poenamoo, Antarctica showing coastline for Land discov.dby Capt. Wilkes of the U.S. Navy , I. of Pteter [sic] 1st, Graham's Ld , and Enderby's Land, with a point marked and labelled Capt. Weddell reached this point in 1823 (neat repair to north-west Africa, small areas of slight discolouration, otherwise very clean), the North Pole with printed hour dial graduated I-XII (x2) and 1-12 (x2) in opposite directions, with brass pointer and engraved brass meridian circle, the mahogany horizon with hand-coloured engraved paper ring graduated in degrees of amplitude and azimuth, days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils and a star chart for the ecliptic and days of the month with an equation of time for the clock's relation to the sun, also with compass directions, on three baluster turned legs united by cross stretchers to the meridian support -- 10in. (25.4cm.) high
