Lot Essay

This is one of a series of heads thought to be of office staff at the Pall Mall Property Company in Manchester where Lowry worked as a rent collector between 1910 and 1952. Lowry gave twelve such heads, including this drawing and Head of a Man, circa 1918, to Frank Whalley in 1975.

Lawrence Ives acquired the present work from Trevor Grimshaw (to whom it was given by Frank Whalley) in 1980 in exchange for a Keith Vaughan Crucifixion and a Roger Hilton Reclining Woman.
