Lot Essay
Private Henry Betts was born near Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk and enlisted in the 80th Regiment at Westminster in June 1859, aged 18 years. In a subsequent career spanning 21 years with the Colours, he served in the East Indies for six years, including the Bhootan and Perak operations; in China for three years; in the Straits Settlements for one year; and in South Africa for 3 years. Betts was discharged in July 1880, his conduct being described as 'Very Good'.
