Large 4° (245 x 174mm). Title in red and black with large woodcut portrait of Gregory XIII, two full-page woodcut illustrations. Contemporary Roman red morocco bound for Cardinal Scipione Borghese Caffarelli by the atelier of the Soresini, elaborately gilt, covers with a broad border tooled with the armorial bearings of the Borghese family, a winged dragon and a spread eagle, and the Caffarelli lion, surrounding the centrally-placed arms of Cardinal Borghese, the Borghese arms quartered with those of Caffarelli, surmounted by a cardinal's hat, spine in five compartments with raised bands, three with lions, winged dragon, a spread eagle and salamanders, gilt and gauffered edges (uppermost and lowest compartments of spine replaced, corners repaired, ties lacking), modern half morocco box.

The second of a three-volume set of the Corpus Juris Canonici bound by the foremost atelier of the period for Scipione Caffarelli, probably in 1605 to coincide with his appointment as a cardinal. The appointment was made by his uncle Pope Paul V Borghese, and Scipione, on entering the Sacred College, adopted the name and arms of Borghese. The first and third volumes of this set appeared in Breslauer Cat.110 items 69 and 70.
