BINDING -- LACTANTIUS. [Opera]. Lyons: Soubron, 1594.

16° (122 x 76mm). Woodcut printer's device on title. Contemporary Roman brown morocco gilt, the covers with outer doule-rules enclosing panels at head and foot, the centre with oval arms below a helm surrounded by large and small gyrant fillets and various small tools, including leaves and an arabesque, the upper cover lettered "B, Curtus ,R, Acad Parth" with the arms of the Curti family, the lower "N, Nucctus Acad Parth" with ?his arms, spine in four compartments with raised bands, repeat overall decoration, gilt and gauffered decoration (occasional small neat repairs to leather, ties lacking). Provenance: B.Curti and N.Nucctus, Rome (binding); Mensing (sale Sotheby's 16 December 1936 lot 341, sold to:); Major J.R. Abbey (armorial bookplate, collection number 1407, sale Sotheby's 22 June 1965 lot 426, sold to:); E.P.Goldschmidt.

A rare edition bound in an unusual Roman binding of about 1600 for students of the Partenopean Academy. A similar binding appeared in the Pearson sale (Sotheby's 28 January 1914) while another Roman binding with two coats-of-arms was lot 135 in the Mensing sale. Not in Baudrier.
