Lot Essay

Pablita Velarde began painting as a child. At fourteen years old, she was accepted into the Santa Fe Indian School (the first governmental boarding school with a fine arts program). She won her first of many awards a year later when two of her murals were exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair. Throughout her career, she painted in the "traditional," or "studio," style, recording scenes of Indian life, folklore, rituals, and ceremonies. Often her paintings capture moments frozen in time, (Wyckoff 1996:20-49).
