P. Cornelius Scipio (d. ca.183 B.C.) gained great fame as a Roman general during the first and second Punic wars, first expelling the armies of Hanibal from Italy, and then driving him from the Iberian peninsular. On his return to Rome in 201 B.C. he was honoured with the soubriquet Africanus. His tomb was considered highly ostentacious at the time of its construction.
