Diana and Actaeon, after Poelenburch

A copy after a picture by Cornelis van Poelenburch, now thought to be by Jan van Haensbergen (1642-1705), sold in Paris, G. Loudmer, 1 July 1991, lot 29. The attribution to Haensbergen was provided by Marijke de Kinkelder from the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in The Hague. Bisschop, who trained as a lawyer, was a very active etcher and draughtsman. Part of his drawn oeuvre consists of copies after old and contemporary masters. According to Arnold Houbraken, Bisschop preferred to copy Netherlandish pictures and particularly venerated the paintings of Poelenburch. Other copies by Bisschop were sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 1 December 1986, lot 48, after Titian, and 16 November 1981, lot 81, after Theodor van Thulden.
Another version of this drawing by Bisschop was sold in the Leverton Harris collection, Sotheby's, 22 May 1928 (photograph Witt Library), lot 129.
