Lot Essay

Van Goyen mostly used sheets three sizes, 100 x 190 mm., 120 x 200 mm. and 170 x 276 mm. The same watermark as that on the present sheet is found on three further drawings of 1653 from that group, one sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 1 July 1986, lot 160, and also illustrated in H.U. Beck, op. cit., nos. 519, 372 and 545, along with two other drawings.
The year 1953 was very prolific for Goyen as a draughtsman: two drawings of the same date and of similar size were sold in these Rooms, 7 July 1992, lot 85, and at Christie's, Amsterdam, 25 November 1992, lot 577, illustrated. The sheet was one of six drawings by Goyen in William Mayor's collection.
