An unusual 19th-Century lacquered-brass surveying level,
signed on the dial ADIE LONDON, the telescope with simple cross-wire and pin-hole sighting tube, with bubble level, vernier attachment arranged to read off the arc, engraved 0°-80°, the compass dial with edge-bar needle on jewelled cap, with screw clamp and cross-bubble, the compass limb mounted on a ball-and-socket joint with staff mounting for attachment to a tripod, contained in the original fitted mahogany case with a single inset brass handle, two lacquered-brass hooks and eyes, the inside of the lid with traces of an original trade label, with the accompanying protective plush-lined leather case -- 10¾in. (27.3cm.) wide
