Unsigned, circa 1665
The dial with brass Roman chapter ring with inner minute ring and half hour makers, tulip-style steel hand, the centre engraved with tulips with a central rosette, blank signature cartouche below XII, the frame of typical construction with columnar pillars supporting urn finials with brass frets to the sides, the front fret pierced and engraved with addorsed fish within tulips, the movement with restored balance and verge escapement, the countwheel strike on bell above, steel hoop and spurs to the back-plate

Lot Essay

The present clock appears to date circa 1665 and has had the escapement neatly replaced. From comparisons it appears to be from the Lothbury workshops but quite why it was not signed is a mystery - unless the maker was trying to thwart the inspector of taxes!
