The boxwood and ebony-strung case with swan-neck pediment to the hood supported on square columns, Gothic arched trunk door, the plinth with chamfered angles and on later bracket feet, the painted dial signed Josh. Black Justones in the centre with subsidiary date and day of week rings, pierced brass hour, minute and sweep centre seconds (broken counter balance) hands, Roman and Arabic chapter ring with painted seasonal spandrels, the arch painted with a string trio with their bows automated with the music, the movement of unusual construction with four baluster pillars, deadbeat escapement to the central going train wound through the centre of the date ring, hour strike on bell on the back-plate with steel trip levers through the plates to the musical movement playing on twelve bells via a 5¼ in. long pin barrel
