Lot Essay

A very similar stool with moulded serpentine cross-stretcher and from the collection of Percival D. Griffiths Esq., is illustrated in R.W. Symonds, The Present State of Old English Furniture, London, 1921, fig. 26. Another similar stool, also with the unusual bell-shaped turning of the feet is illustrated in C. Claxton Stevens and S. Whittington, 18th Century English Furniture, The Norman Adams Collection, Woodbridge, rev.ed., 1985, p. 25.
