Crossbanded overall in walnut and inlaid with boxwood and ebonised lines, and with foliate hinges and corner mounts, the rectangular hinged top enclosing a well, the front with a fall-flap concealing a long drawer and two secret drawers, the sides with carrying-handles, on a later stand with drop-in top and square chamferred legs, the hinged catch broken, the carrying-handles different

Lot Essay

George Green, a close friend and neighbour of the Rollasons, was a connoisseur who assisted with the Birmingham loan exhibition 'Art Treasures of the Midlands'.

A similar kingwood coffre fort, or jewel-chest, was sold by Lord Brownlow and the Trustees of the Brownlow Chattels Settlements, Belton House, Lincolnshire, Christie's house sale, 30 April 1984, lot 8 and again anonymously in these Rooms, 9 April 1992, lot 3.
