Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1865
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Both lots recorked, capsuled, and labelled by the Château in 1992
Parcel: lots 739-740
Of all the great pre-phylloxera vintages, 1865 has turned out to be the sturdiest and most dependable.
Provenance: Sir George Meyrick, Bt., cellar at Hinton Admiral, sold at Christie's 26 June 1970.
The identical wine was also binned in large quantities at Bodorgan, the Meyrick family estate in Anglesey, North Wales. The cellar beneath the house was brick vaulted and in unusually wet weather had a small stream running through it. Amongst a wealth of other wines, were two bins containing 9 dozen bottles of 1865 Lafite unlabelled but with the original short lead Château capsules, and virtually all in superb condition, very few with levels below top shoulder.
Seven notes on this wine, last tasted September 1995, four being bottles from Sir George Meyrick's cellar at Bodorgan, all superb, as the following bottle shoulde be. MB
