Lot Essay

It could be regarded as evidence of the closeness of the Nureyev and Fonteyn partnership that they exchanged costumes. Fonteyn gave Nureyev one of her Swan Lake tutu's which was included in the Nureyev Auction, Christie's, Park Avenue, New York, January 12th, 1995 as Lot 64.

Nureyev wrote in his autobiography, that the first opportunity he had to exercise one of his ambitions, to be a choreographer, was in Cannes. He, Rosella Hightower, Erik Bruhn and Sonia Arova formed a small group and organized programmes of their own. ..My own contribution was a new version of the slow movement, the adagio in the famous pas de deux from The Nut-cracker...I worked it out and taught it to Rosella, and later on we performed it on the London TV and in Paris...
