Lot Essay

John Absolon began his career as a portraitist and scene painter in oil and in watercolour. He travelled to Paris and on his return was elected to the New Watercolour Society. In 1858 he resigned to concentrate on painting in oil. This decision was, however, later reversed when he was active again in the Society.
