Lot Essay

This drawing relates to the stage design for the second act of I Fabii by Lotto del Mazzo, performed in the Salone dei Cinquecento in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, in 1567. The festivities, celebrating the baptism of Eleonora dei Medici, were described by Alessandro Checcherelli in Descrizione di tutte le feste e l'insieme del battesimo della Primogenita del Principe di Firenze, Florence, 1567.
Another capriccio view of Florence, very similar to the present sheet but for the principal set of G.B. Cini's La Vedova performed in 1569, is in the Uffizi, G.G. Bertelà and A.P. Tofani, Feste e Apparati Medicei da Cosimo I a Cosimo II, Florence, 1969, no. 9, fig. 1.
Lanci was responsible for several festivities for the Medici family. In 1565 he designed the floats for the masquerade of the Genealogia degli Dei, and in 1569 the sets for La Vedova, and La Coronazione di Saul by G.M. Cecchi.
