With three ships flying the Dutch flag, the center one named VEV UM in black and the other two with indecipherable names in gilt, beneath them the inscription GLUCKIG ARIVEMENT (joyous arrival or happy homecoming), all within richly enamelled borders

Lot Essay

This rare subject of treasure-laden merchantmen returning to home port, so emblematic of the China trade, is found in the Mottahedeh collection (Howard & Ayers, op. cit., p. 198) and in the Hodroff collection (D.S. Howard, op. cit., p. 66) where the author notes that "Few examples are known and there was probably only one small consignment of plates, undoubtedly ordered specially"
