A SET OF LATE GEORGE III MAHOGANY OPEN ARMCHAIRS
Possibly by Gillows, two circa 1800, the third 19th century
Each incurved tablet crestrail with blind fretwork panel above three pierced vertical interlocking splats and reeded downswept arms terminating in leaf-wrapped knuckles, the cream leatherette upholstered trapezoidal seat above a reeded apron on tapering square reeded legs with collared spade feet, one with the white painted stencil 4390, another with paper label inscribed in blue ink 7 another 3 (3)

Lot Essay

With their incurved rectangular backs and three upright splats, these chairs are similar to a design by Gillows dated 1793 (illustrated L. Boynton ed., Gillow Furniture Designs: 1760-1800, Royston, Hertsfordshire, 1995, fig. 178).
