Lot Essay

Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle, commissioned John Vanbrugh to build the house. Together with Nicholas Hawksmoor, using some of the best craftsmen, he created one of the most imposing and grand Baroque houses in England.

The filming of Evelyn Waugh's book Brideshead Revisited at Castle Howard in the 1980s introduced the beauty of the great house to a worldwide audience.
