A Rare German Gothic Shaffron
Late 15th Century
Comprising a main plate shaped to the front of the horse's head with a prominent keel-shaped medial ridge down the centre of the nose, hinged cheek-pieces (the left one a replacement), pointed tubular riveted ear-pieces, and U-shaped eye openings with spoon-shaped protective flaps above, each embossed with a conventional eye, decorated at the top with a pair of wide curved flutes and on the nose with a chevron-like arrangement of narrow flutes, and pierced between the eyes for the attachment of an escutcheon (missing)
