INSCRIBED TO LAWRENCE BY THE TRANSLATOR, Lawrence's friend Sir Edward Marsh (1872-1953). Marsh combined various positions in the civil service with an interest in literature and the arts, developed through his membership of the 'Apostles' at Cambridge (where he befriended G.E. Moore, Bertrand Russell and Maurice Baring). He also edited Georgian Poetry -- whose contributors included James Elroy Flecker, Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves and D.H. Lawrence -- from 1912 to 1917. Marsh and Lawrence first met in 1918, when Marsh was Churchill's private secretary, and the twin strands of interests in literature and colonial policy sustained the friendship between the two men, both of whom also worked for Churchill together on policy in the Middle East (typically, Marsh also corrected the proofs of Churchill's Marlborough (London: 1933-8) and his subsequent writings).
