Lot Essay

Thomas Chippendale provided a close pattern for a serpentine 'Commode Clothes Press' in The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1762, no. 130. His pattern provides designs for a chest-of-drawers with straight canted angles and bracket feet, or a more elaborate version embellished with acanthus-wrapped trusses and truss bracket feet. The same pattern of acanthus-enriched handle and medallion plate features on a clothes-press supplied in 1771 for Nostell Priory, Yorkshire (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, figs. 239 and 263).
