Lot Essay

The 'commode' chest-of-drawers, serpentined in the French manner and incorporating a dressing-table slide, relates closely to a pair of commodes at Corsham Court, Wiltshire. The latter are attributed to the Marlborough cabinet-maker Henry Hill (d.1778), who was employed at the house over a number of years from 1760 (L. Wood, 'Furniture for Lord Delaval: Metropolitan and Provincial', Furniture History, Leeds 1990, p. 206, fig. 24). Among related commodes is one, with slide fitment, sold from The Samuel Messer Collection, in these Rooms, 5 December 1991, lot 118.
