SEAL: A fine impression of the Great Seal of Scotland of Charles I, in brown wax (diameter 148 mm. (5 7/8 in.), reverse depicting the king mounted in armour with drawn sword, with manor and castle in distance), pendant on vellum tag, very minor chipping, otherwise in excellent condition.

ISSUED BY CHARLES I WHILE A PRISONER, BEARING THE GREAT SEAL OF SCOTLAND. Charles grants baronial tenure over the manor of Rattrey with all its granaries, mills and salmon fisheries, to Francis Hay. In spite of the apparent royal authority of the grant, Charles I was not in Edinburgh but imprisoned in Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight at this date, a year before his trial and execution on a charge of treason.
