Lot Essay
This is one of the earliest known copies of the Zij-i Ilkhani. copied only four years after the death of its author. It was copied in Tabriz, the capital chosen by Abaqa Khan in preference to Maragha, the capital city of his father Hülegü. Thirteen years earlier, in 1265, Abaqa Khan had been enthroned in Tabriz, on 19 June, a date selected as auspicious by Tusi.
Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan Nasir al-Din al-Tusi was born in Tus in 597/1201 and died 672/1274 in Baghdad. He was the most eminent scholar of the Medieval world in trigonometry and wrote on a wide range of topics within the areas of mathematics and astronomy as well as on logic and theology. He is well-known as the founder of the observatory at Maragha in 1259 for the Ilkhanid ruler Hülegü.
The author gives a short account of Chingiz Khan and his successors down to Ulugh Beg. He describes how that ruler called him together with other astronomers to assist him in his work. They selected the site of Maragha and began to commence a series of observations which were completed under Abaqa Khan. Tusi compiled their results in the present tables.
