Lot Essay

This carved panel is remarkably close in design to the carved tombtsone of Mahmud ibn Dada Muhammad dated in the month of Rabi'II AH 753 (May-June 1352 AD) which is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Safadi, Y.: Islamic Calligraphy, London, 1978, no.127, p.115). The similarities are so close that it is very possible that bnoth were made for the same commission. Certainly they are both either from the same workshop, or from an identical model.

In that tombstone the angularity of the centre is offset by the more curvilinear decoration in the outer two bands. The present door in its condition accentuates this angularity.
