Of rectangular form, the turquoise blue ground with a complex design of interlaced Chinese cloud-scrolls with black outlines, details painted in coral-red and cobalt-blue, a narrow light red stripe border, crack, white metal frame
10¼ x 5 1/8in. (26 x 13cm.)

Lot Essay

Tiles of this design are found in the Süleymaniye Mosque (1550-57) and the Tomb of Sultan Selim II (1574-75), see Altun A., "Iznik Tiles and Ceramics" in Turkish Tiles and Ceramics, Sadberk Hanim Museum, Istanbul, 1991, p.39, no.i57.
