AN UNUSUAL MYCENAEAN POTTERY BIRD-SHAPED ASKOS CIRCA 10TH CENTURY B.C.
The tapering body with small upturned tail, the neck with trefoil mouth, a loop handle on the back connected to the mouth by a horizontal strut, brownish-orange stripe around the body with a ladder pattern on the handle, small chip to tail, 4¼ in.(10.8 cm.) long; five Mycenaean vessels, all decorated with brown encircling bands, comprising a storage jar, the elegantly tapering body with three loop handles and frieze of crosshatching on the shoulders, 3 7/8 in. (9.8 cm.) high; a squat alabastron, the cylindrical body with three loop handles, 'u'-motifs around the shoulder, one handle chipped, 3¼ in. (8.3 cm.) high; two stirrup jars with bulbous bodies, both with twin conjoined handles and a side spout, one chipped, 3¾ in. (9.5 cm.) and 3¼ in. (8.3 cm. ) high; and a two-handled flask, the shoulder decorated with bivalves, 2¾ in. (7 cm.) high, all circa 13th Century B.C. (6)
