A FINE AND RARE CELADON-GLAZED CHARGER
XUHUATANG ZHI HALLMARK WITHIN A DOUBLE SQUARE, QIANLONG

The dish has shallow rounded sides, raised on a slightly tapered ring foot, well moulded on the central medallion with a single large peony borne on a stem bearing jagged-edged leaves and a small bud, the details of veins on the leaves and petals finely incised, the wide everted rim with a key-fret band, all covered in an attractive pastel green glaze, the base with the hallmark, Xuhuatang zhi, 'Made for the Hall of the Bright Rising Sun', in underglaze-blue

Lot Essay

No other ceramic bearing the Xuhuatang zhi hallmark appears to have been published, although a vessel inscribed with the four-character, Xuhuatang cang, 'Treasure from the Hall of the Bright Rising Sun' has been dated to the Qianlong period by Geng Baochang, see Mingqing Ciqi Jianding, Ming and Qing Porcelain on Inspection, 1993, p. 348, pl. 5.
