A German parcel-gilt stoneware and cherrywood gueridon
In the Neo-Renaissance Style, Second half 19th Century
The circular top inset with a central stoneware section decorated overall in low relief, centred with a medallion-inscribed monogram, surrounded by four ribbon-tied garland-entwined oval medallions, one showing an armoriated plate with a coronet and a motto reading Force et Prudence (Strength and Prudence), the other ones showing personnifications of Architecture, Painting and Sculpture, with captions reading respectively DIE HÛTTE UND DAS TEMPEL/DAS GLEICHE LEHREN SIE/BEI ALLEM WAS DU TREIBEST/VERGISS DAS RICHTE MAASS NIE (The hut as the temple/teach the same thing/in everything you do/never forget this principle), BEIM ERSTE BILDE DUNKELN/DIE FARBEN MANCHMAL NACH/WOHL DEM DEN NICHT BLOSS FARBE/DEN INNEREN WERT BESTACH (As paintings age the colour sometimes fade: fortunate he who is not merely influenced by colour but also by inner worth), and DAS SCHÔNE RUHT IN ALLEM/SOGAR IM RAUHEN STEIN/NUR MUST DU ES ERKENNEN/UND DANN SEIN MEISTER SEIN (Beauty rests in all things/even in raw stone/but you must recognise it/and then be its master), and by concave-sided panels decorated with trailing vine, within an egg-and-dart outer moulding, above a fluted frieze with gadrooned outer moulding, on a ring-turned bulbous shaft applied with laurel wreaths, on a circular stepped base
