A French ormolu-mounted mahogany commode
In the Louis XVI Style, After the model by Stockel, Late 19th Century
Of bow-front outline, with a breakfront breccia marble top, above a central frieze drawer, with a concealed spring-loaded drawer below, above a deep central drawer with a further concealed spring loaded drawer below, flanked to each side by a ribbon-tied torch trophy panel and with a curved panel door, centred by a circular rosette, the interior with a shelf, on four lion paw feet with pad bases
85½ in. (217 cm.) wide; 36½ in. (92.7 cm.) high; 31 in. (78.7 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

Stöckel supplied to the Comte de Provence in 1786 the original model for this commode. It was later altered by Gustave Beneman for the King's Bedchamber at Compiègne, and can now be found in the Louvre Museum, Paris.
Another was sold at Sotheby's, London 16 March 1990, lot 213.
