Of a naked woman, with elaborately plaited hair and with drapery falling from her shoulders, opening the lid of a jewellery-laden casket, standing on a projecting base inscribed to the left side H. Sobre 1888 and with the title raised to the front, on a brèche marble plinth, of 'D'-shape, with spreading sides and stepped base
The relief: 27 in. (68.5 cm.) wide; 63 in. (160 cm.) high; 7½ in. (19 cm.) deep
The plinth: 16 in. (40.5 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Born in Paris, Hyacinthe Phileas Sobre (d. 1902) entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1844 and studied under Jules Ramey and Augustin Dumont. Exhibiting at the Salon from 1855, Sobre received many public commissions, contributing to the sculptural content of the Cour du Louvre, the Opéra and the Hôtel de Ville.

The present bas-relief, entitled L'Ecrin (The Jewellery Casket), was exhibited at the Salon in 1888 (no. 4648) and at the Paris Universal Exhibition the following year (no. 2149).
