Chewing pan in India is a luxury everyone can afford. It is the way the pan is served that may differ from person to person. Chewing the betel-nut leaf along with various spices after a meal is supposed to help digest the meal, chewed along with tobacco one experiences an uplifting feeling, it is therefore after dinner that most people include tobacco in their pan. The pandan offered for sale as lot 390 is a wonderful example of the colourful Mughal court in the 18th century where the Badshahs and their Begums may well have indulged in this old Indian habit from this very box
