linocut with handcolouring in watercolour, 1916, on firm wove paper, watermark ENGLAND, signed and dated in pencil, one of apparently only two handcoloured impressions, with margins, a deckle edge at the bottom, some surface dirt and one or two creases in places in the margins, generally in very good condition

Lot Essay

Emil Maetzel left a career in architecture to become a painter. Together with his wife Dorothea and Heinrich Steinhagen he founded the Hamburg Secession in 1919, strongly influence by the style of the Brücke artists.
