Second edition of Müller's account of Bering's discoveries during his second expedition. Müller, a professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, was closely involved in the planning and analysis of Bering's polar expedition of 1741. While casting doubts on the existence of a North-West Passage, his book provides the first comprehensive account of Russian discoveries in the North Pacific, the single most detailed account of Bering's discovery of the strait named after him, and of the western limits of North America. The English editions, taken from the third volume of Müller's Semmlung Russische Geschichte (1758), add Jefferys' maps and 8 page preface. "This important book is becoming indispensable for the history of discovery and exploration in the Northwest Pacific" (Sabin). Hill, p.206; Howes M875; Sabin 51285; Tooley 339.
