With an urn finial hung with drapery swags on a turned socle and a vitruvian scrolled frieze, the circular white enamel and black painted dial with Roman numerals numbering the hours and Arabic numbers for the minutes, between acanthus and pommegranite finials and ram's mask capped pilasters with a glazed aperture for the pendulum, with a guttae, acanthus and grape pendant, the pierced side panels and some finials replaced

Lot Essay

This 'Goût Grecque' cartel clock corresponds to a design by the architect Jean-Charles Delafosse of circa 1770, which is now at Waddesdon Manor. This design, together with a cartel fo this model, is illustrated in H. Otto,meyer, P.Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p.182, 3.8.1 and 3.8.2. A further closely related clock is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopedie de La Pendule Francaise, Paris, 1997, p. 191, fig. C.
