Lot Essay

In the mid-1960s Guston's abstraction began to evolve, and the gestural forms began a gradual transformation into figures and objects. By 1970 Guston had made a radical return to figuration and developed a symbolic realism that had a profound effect on American painting. Between 1970-1971 Guston was the Artist-in-Residence at American Academy in Rome and travelled throughout Italy, Sicily and Greece. During these travels, he created a series of oils on paper based on Italian formal gardens and Etruscan and Roman excavations, of which Roma is a fine example.
