A GREEK BRONZE FIGURE OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT
Hellenistic Period, Circa 3rd-2nd Century B.C.
Perhaps based on an original portrait by his court artist Lysippos, the divined conqueror depicted in heroic nudity, a mantle resting loosely on his left shoulder and wrapped around his left fore-arm, the drapery falling below, standing in controposto, his weight on his right leg, his left leg relaxed and bent at the knee, his left foot slightly pulled back, his heel raised, perhaps once holding a spear or scepter in the now-missing hand of his raised right arm, his left arm bent with his hand resting on his hip, his luxurious curling locks in the characteristic anastole, pulled back in a diadem which is tied at the nape of his neck
