An unusual late 17th-Century octagonal ivory diptych sundial,
by C. Bloud Dieppe, the exterior of the lid showing a shield with a crown and flanked by three figures with clubs, the four quarters of the shield with two stars and a fountain (x2), a mother and child swan and two stars, and a mother and two children swans with two stars, edged with pecked Dieppe decoration, the interior of the lid with a circular recess applied with hand coloured engraved paper showing the latitudes and longitudes of twenty-four continental cities and towns, signed up the middle C. Bloud Dieppe, surrounded by the motto ITA HOMINIS VELVT VMBRA FLVIT DVM STARE VIDETVR, with sliding iron pin gnomon support to change angle for latitudes 10 to [?]70° and iron plummet, stamped beneath ~CB~, the base with glazed compass with decorative paper wind rose graduated in degrees, with iron needle with brass cap, the compass surrounded with hour graduations (x3) and pecked ornamentation, the underside of the base with the figures of several hens standing on refectory tables listening to a fox, in a cassock, speaking in a pulpit, another fox in similar garb behind him, beneath the motto L'HABIT NE FAIT PAS LE MOINE, with two brass hooks and pins -- 2 13/16in. (7.7cm.) long
