A FLAMBÉ-GLAZED 'POMEGRANATE' VASE
Incised Jiaqing six-character seal mark and of the period (1796-1820)
Of hexafoil lobed section with conforming neck and everted rim, standing on a low flaring foot, all under a deep reddish-purple glaze with mid- and light blue and streaks running between the segments, the inside of the mouth with a pale blue glaze.

Lot Essay

This form of copper glaze is often known as Jun-type, in reference to its earlier Song dynasty prototype. Compare to a similar vase also with an incised Jiaqing mark, sold in London, 7 December 1993, lot 276. Other comparable flambé vases with Qianlong marks are published, cf. Ming and Qing Ceramics and Works of Art from the Osaka Museum, p.46, fig. 209; in the The Baur Collection Geneva - Chinese Ceramics, vol. III, no. A 291; and by Liu Liang-yu, Ch'ing Official and Popular Wares, vol. 5, p. 207. A Daoguang example was exhibited in Splendour of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, Urban Council, 1992, p. 359, no. 226.
