Lot Essay

Two slightly smaller Kangxi marked dishes bearing similar decoration are in the collection of the Percival David Foundation, and are illustrated by M. Medley in Illustrated Catalogue of Ming Polychrome Wares, London, Percival David Foundation, 1978, plate XII, no. 145.
A pair of dishes with the same design as the current dish from the Shanghai Museum are illustrated by Lu Minghua in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1998, pl. 146. A further pair of such dishes from the collection of E.T. Chow were sold in Hong Kong in November 1980. This type of dish was copied in the 18th century, but usually the cavetto on the later examples was undecorated.
