Lot Essay

The number of extant examples of this model testifies to its popularity. Formerly attributed to Andrea Riccio, it is now among those bronzes which have been re-attributed to Riccio's contemporary, Severo da Ravenna (see Avery & Radcliffe, and de Winter, ops. cit.). Versions are in the collections of major museums such as the Bargello, the Wallace Collection and the Frick. This example is of particularly high quality.
