Lot Essay

A Belgian artist who had begun his studies as a sculptor in his father's studio, Verboeckhoven gained international fame for his paintings of animals. He was a recipient of numerous foreign decorations from France, Belgium, Portugal, and Germany. He was particularly admired by American and English collectors, and on one voyage to London painted the felines of the Royal Zoo. Though his studio was in Bruxelles, he submitted paintings not only to the Paris Salon but also to exhibitions in London and St. Petersburg.
